1.                   Purpose

 

The purpose of this Status Report is to provide IFMAR officials preliminary information for their review and consideration in their evaluation of Gulf Coast Raceway bid to host the 2010 IFMAR 200 mm Sedan World Championship.

 

2.                   Program

 

The event will begin on Thursday July 22nd, and conclude Sunday July 31st. The racing program will conclude on Saturday July 30th. Sunday July 31st is reserved as a spare day as contingency for unforeseen events that may cause a delay in the racing program. The awards presentation and banquet will take place on Sunday July 31st.

 

The event track will be closed for practice during the two weeks preceding the start of frequency controlled practice as per IFMAR rule 2.2 of the 1/10th I.C. Track Racing and Technical Rules.

3.                   Facilities

 

Gulf Cost Raceway is a 15 acre state of the art RC racing facility with a permanent open air on-road and covered off-road track. The facility has many modern features that most demanding RC racer have come to expect. It has been the host of the 2007 ROAR Nationals, 2006 RC-Pro Nationals, the annual Gulf Coast Raceway Grand Prix, ROAR South West Championship Series Regional and monthly club races.

 

Some of the state of the art features Gulf Coast Raceway facility has to offer include:  

 

  • Permanent tire trueing station area with 12v power supply (drivers to provide their own tire truers)

 

  • Two track-side large air compressors to allow drivers to blow dust off cars

 

  • Covered pit areas capable of accommodating over 200 racers

 

  • Two permanent track side snack bars capable of serving breakfast and lunch for over 300 people

 

  • Computer monitors throughout the facility linked to RC Pro software showing live race progress

 

  • Air Conditioned VIP viewing area with refreshment/catering capabilities

 

  • Hobby shop at the facility with full stock of parts/accessories/consumables for most major RC brands

 

  • RV facilities with water, electricity and sewer hook-up capable of accommodating up to 6 RV vehicles

 

  • Parking space to accommodate over 300 cars

 

  • Modern full restroom facilities by track side capable of accommodating a full racing event

 

  • Office space available with internet access for private visiting teams meetings

 

  • The facility will have temporary seating installed for public viewing capable of accommodating in excess of 300 spectators

 

  • Office space with a/c, internet connection, telephone will be available for the use of Race Officials and International Jury

Figure one shows the Gulf Coast Raceway racing surface. The racing surface dimensions are within IFMAR specifications.

Figure two shows the 4,000 square foot Race Control and Pit Area Building. The top floor is where the press room, race control, team meeting area and official private area is located. The lower floor holds the largest driver pit area. This area has three bathrooms, snack bar and the pit area can comfortably accommodate 150 drivers

Figure five shows the driver stand and the hot pit area. It also shows one of three driver pit areas. This area alone can comfortably accommodate 32 drivers.

 

4.                   Administration

 

All industry specific media including leading RC publications and RC websites will be invited to the event. In addition local radio, TV, and print media will be notified of the event.  All race sponsorship will be handled through the Gulf Coast Racers club.  All event inquiries should be directed to:

The venue will have dual public announcement systems, one of which will be designated for official communications only. The venue is also equipped with redundant timing Systems. Two timing loops installed and a third to be available as back-up.

 

There will be an office for the IFMAR, EFRA, FEMCA, ROAR, FAMAR, officials and drivers to use for business.

 

Press will have an office with internet hook up, so they can update their stories.

 

Opening ceremony will be held with country flag and United States national anthem.

 

Lift cranes will be supplied for the media to get great aerial shots.

 

Closing ceremony will be held offsite, with food, and fun.

 

Gulf Coast Racers will submit at least three brands of fuel to IFMAR for approval as the event racing fuel

 

Fuel storage and distribution plan is now approved by the pertinent local authorities.

The following are frequencies that are permitted:

 

27 MHz: only frequencies 26.995, 27,045, 27,145 27,195 and 27, 255.

75 MHz: All channels 61 thru 90

50 MHz: Channels 00, 02, 06 and 08

53 MHz: Frequencies 53,100 thru 53, 800 MHz

2.4 GHz : All DSS and Spectrum systems

 

Drivers using 50 MHz radios must have an FCC Amateur Radio License issued for that radio in their possession.

Project Row Houses, The Ensemble Theatre and The Buffalo Soldiers National Museum are all devoted to showcasing African-American history and culture in the community. Talento Bilingue de Houston is one of the largest Latino cultural centers in the United States and develops programs and activities such as mariachi, ballet folklorico, drama, video and film production, professional theater, art exhibitions and festivals.

 

Houston’s restaurant scene is as ethnically diverse as its 4+ million residents. ForbesTraveler.com ranked Houston as the sixth best restaurant city in America, behind New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and New Orleans. Home to more than 5,000 restaurants, Houston offers everything from fine dining to hole-in-the-wall Tex-Mex. 

 

When it comes to leisure activities, Houston offers infinite possibilities. With 165 public and private golf courses around the city and teams in nearly every major professional sport, Sports fans can experience sports fever 12 months out of the year. Enjoy saltwater fishing, boating and great Gulf Coast seafood in Bay Area Houston - just 30 minutes from downtown Houston. History buffs can visit the San Jacinto Battleground Complex, which marks the spot where Texas won its independence from Mexico.

 

 

 

Things To Do Around the Greater Houston Area

 

As the fourth largest city in the United States, Houston is a leader in business, entertainment, the arts and so much more.

 

Downtown

  • Discovery Green, a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston, opened April 13, 2008. With its proximity to the George R. Brown Convention Center, Minute Maid Park and Toyota Center, Discovery Green is an ideal location for the city's newest attraction. Park features include a one-acre lake, children's playground, interactive water features, an amphitheater, dog runs, public art works, spacious green lawns and two destination restaurants.
  • The Houston Rockets, Comets and Aeros moved to the Toyota Center, a new downtown arena, in October 2003. The facility boasts the city's largest escalator.
  • One of the finest baseball parks in America, Minute Maid Park features a retractable roof and is home to the Houston Astros.
  • The Downtown Aquarium, an underwater dining and entertainment adventure, features 500,000 gallons of marine life, a live white tiger exhibit, several themed restaurants, a Ferris wheel, boardwalk, dancing fountains and more.
  • Take in a movie, enjoy a cocktail, or dine at one of many restaurants at downtown's Bayou Place.
  • Main Street is downtown Houston's entertainment district, allowing pedestrians to enjoy street cafes and live music at select times during the year. Beautiful fountains and METRORail, which takes riders from downtown to Reliant Park, make this district a hub of activity and fun. There are more than 70 dining and entertainment options to choose from.
  • The new Houston Pavilions development will bring venues like House of Blues to downtown in late 2008.

 

Theater District

  • With more than 14,000 theater seats in a concentrated Theater District, Houston offers a variety of options for theater-goers.
  • Houston is one of five cities in the United States with resident companies in the four disciplines of the performing arts—Houston Ballet, Houston Grand Opera, Houston Symphony and Alley Theatre
  • The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts features two theaters and is home to Theatre Under the Stars, Broadway in Houston and Uniquely Houston.
  • The Fresh Arts Coalition is a collaboration of the most original and thought-provoking arts groups in Houston. The 19 dance, theatre, literary, musical and visual arts organizations collectively raise awareness of the size and diversity of the arts in Houston.

 

Sports Teams

  • Houston has sports fever 12 months out of the year. The city boasts nearly every major professional sports team including:

  • Houston reigns as a city for major sporting events after hosting the 2004 Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Super Bowl XXXVIII, 2005 World Series, the 2005 Big 12 Championship and the Tennis Masters Cup in 2003 and 2004, as well as the annual Shell Houston Open PGA Golf). Houston sports fans are looking forward to the 2011 NCAA Men's Final Four (College Basketball) and 2011 Senior Games (Senior Olympics).

 

 

Museum District

  • Explore a world of art, history and nature in the fourth largest museum district in the United States, featuring 18 world-class museums.
  • Visit the Houston Museum of Natural Science and check out the IMAX, planetarium and the Cockrell Butterfly Center.
  • The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston is one of the world's renowned art museums and the largest in the Southwest.
  • The Menil Collection is one of the most significant art collections of the twentieth century. The collection consists of nearly 15,000 works dating from the Paleolithic era to the present day and includes rare pieces by artists such as Picasso and Matisse.

 

Family Fun

  • Have some out-of-this-world fun, touch a moon rock or land a shuttle at Space Center Houston.
  • Tour Johnson Space Center and check out the heart of America's space program, Mission Control.
  • Enjoy the rainforest, white sand beaches, penguins and a discovery pyramid-all at Moody Gardens on Galveston Island.
  • Set in a 55-acre lush tropical landscape, the Houston Zoo is home to more than 4,500 exotic animals representing more than 800 species.
  • Stoll along the Kemah Boardwalk and choose from 10 different restaurants, ride the Ferris wheel and train for fun, or just watch the sailboats from your table.
  • Dine at the Downtown Aquarium under several giant aquariums, take shark tunnel tours or enjoy fun and games that include a Ferris wheel and a carousel.

 

Shopping

  • The Galleria, one of Houston's most popular shopping and tourist destinations, features more than 375 fine stores and restaurants, a full-size ice rink, two high-rise hotels, two office towers and a variety of other amenities. Anchor stores include Neiman Marcus, Macy's, Saks Fifth Avenue and Nordstrom.
  • Katy Mills Mall, a 1.3 million square foot market, features 200 of the best names in manufacturers' and retail outlets, off price retailers and unique specialty stores. Also at the mall are various restaurants and several family-oriented entertainment venues.
  • Houston's European-style shopping center is Uptown Park. Unique clothing, jewelry, shoes, gifts and linens make up its collection of Old World charm and elegant stores.
  • Traders Village, the largest market on the Texas Gulf Coast, covers more than 105 acres, with 800 dealers every weekend.
  • An enchanting Victorian village, Old Town Spring Shopping Village features more than 150 merchants offering home decor, art and antiques.
  • The Historic Houston Heights boasts well-preserved Victorian architecture along verdant Heights Boulevard and Yale streets. Don't miss the antiques, unique decor, vintage clothing, art galleries garden shops and 19th Street's multitude of shops.
  • Like New York's Orchard street, Harwin Drive boasts many stores selling leather goods, jewelry, perfume and clothing - some real and some faux, but most at incredible prices. 

 

Outdoor Activities

  • Houston is a coastal city with some of the country's most diverse saltwater fishing opportunities available in the nearby waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Houston is also surrounded by 1.5 million acres of lakes and 80,000 miles of rivers and streams.
  • Houston has more than 43,700 acres of green and growing city parks.
  • The first project of Buffalo Bayou's 30-year master plan was completed in June 2006, offering a new lighting system, expanded hike and bike trails and boat tours along the bayou.
  • Enjoy Gulf Coast seafood, the great outdoors and the relaxing waters of Clear Lake on the Kemah Boardwalk - just 30 minutes from downtown Houston.
  • Head to miles of Galveston's sun-drenched beaches just one hour from downtown Houston
  • The Woodlands Town Center is positioned to be the new downtown and social hub of The Woodlands - "America's Hometown." It's a diverse mix of business, shopping, dining and entertainment venues with a world-class sculpture collection and a large "town square" designed for gatherings and lush landscaping.

 

Gulf Coast Racers plan on making arrangements with local tour companies to provide daily tours to some of the most popular destinations listed above for purchase by visitors friends and family.

 

The Hospitality Director will be able to provide information/directions to any of the above destinations for those visitors that prefer to tour the Greater Houston Area on their own.

 

Local Hotel Information

 

There are a number of quality hotels within 3.2 miles (5 km) from Gulf Coast Raceway. These hotels offer a wide range of accommodations to suit every budget and most are located within a five minute drive to the facility. Some of these hotels also offer courtesy transportation to nearby places. Below are examples of hotels available near the facility. Gulf Coast Racers will select at least two hotels as “headquarter” hotels and will negotiate transportation to and from Gulf Coast Raceway as part of the hotel rate. The selected main headquarter hotel must have a banquet facility large enough to host the awards banquet.

6.         Time Keeping

 

Race Control will use RC Scoring Pro software for time keeping of the event. The track has 2 AMB decoders with 2 loops installed which are available to suit various race formats. One loop is located after pit lane and can be used for qualifying rounds. The second loop is before entry to the pit lanes and can be used for the mains. The timing and scoring computers are on a dedicated circuit with back up battery security. Two printers are available in race control. A copy machine to handle the copy needs of the teams, drivers, manufacturers and media is also available.

Display the leaders name and pace, or each racers name and lap time as they cross the loop on a BetaBrite display. Two concurrent displays are currently supported. More displays will be supported in the future.

Practice Mode

Individual popup windows for each racer. All times are saved in a database table and can be reprinted or displayed on the screen in the future. You can even query the database and ask it who had the fastest practice laps. Individual detailed printouts available. You can print individual racers laps times with a barcode scanner (optional). Lost the sheet with your practice laps ? Print another! Each sheet shows every practice session of the day for that racer with detailed information: Numbers of laps, fastest lap, slowest lap, run time, average of the best 5 laps, best 10 laps, best 15 laps and best 20 laps.

You select the number of racers in each race in real time (not hard coded into the class options). If 5 people left early you can remove them from the mains and try to reduce the number of races. Easily change two races with ten total racers from eight racers in the 'A' and two in the 'B' to ten in the 'A' main. Takes 5 mouse clicks!

Reporting Tool

Predefined buttons run certain reports for you, but you can also learn how to program SQL and run any query you like. Super powerful! You can run a query to show who ran the fastest practice lap today, or who had the fastest qualifier this year, etc.

8.         The Venue

 

Located in Porter, Texas, Gulf Coast Raceway is in a suburb about 25 miles north of the center of Houston and about 12 miles from Houston George Bush International Airport. The map below illustrates Gulf Coast Raceway location relative to the center of Houston and George Bush Intercontinental Airport.

 

George Bush Intercontinental Airport

 

The eight largest airport in the US and currently ranking as the world's 6th busiest air facility by the number of aircraft movements, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) sees upwards of 43 million passengers per year. George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is presently served by 17 scheduled passenger airlines. Over 185 domestic and international destinations are accessible through nonstop or direct flights from IAH. The airlines operate out of the airport's five modern and accessible terminal buildings (A, B, C, D and E). Please note that all international arrivals are processed through the Federal Inspection Services (FIS) Building at Terminal E .

 

Located 12 miles from Porter Texas and roughly 22 miles / 35 km north of central Houston, George Bush Airport features five separate passenger terminals and covers approximately 10,000 acres / 4,050 hectares.

 

Houston's airport offers plenty of transport options, allowing passengers to quickly reach most of the greater Houston destinations.
